![]() After all, this is what QuickTime uses to play back MIDI files. But there should be a GM sound set built into Apple's audio services probably also a way to access that via the free Audio Units plug-ins that ship with every Mac. Bandstand is a versatile software instrument designed as the optimal solution for musicians, performers and producers that work with the General MIDI format. GM has gone the way of the Dodo, so very few vendors support it anymore with dedicated sound sets. By far the most usable and musical one is the one in Goliath it isn't a single sample transposed across the keyboard. But there are one or two sounds defined in the GM spec that rarely show up properly otherwise, so I pay a tiny amount of attention. I don't use GM so don't bother retaining such info in my memory even when I see it. I have found the best GM set to be in Quantum Leap's Goliath, which is on sale for half price now. You didn't mention price range, but there are often sales going on (such as right now). Native Instruments had one (was it called "Bandstand"?) but it was canceled - maybe some vendors still sell boxed copies from inventory, but chances are that it won't work on Lion. ![]()
